When self storage started here in the Rio Grande Valley the units were all regular units, no climate controlled units. The Affordable Attic saw the need for climate controlled self storage and that’s when we started deploying climate controlled self storage units in our facilities throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Affordable Attic Self Storage Climate Control
Since then all our self storage facilities offer climate controlled as well as non-climate controlled units. You may wonder why after so many years of non-climate self storage would we need climate controlled self storage units. The fact of the matter is that storing in a non-climate storage unit is equivalent to storing in your garage. The summers months here in the valley reach the 100’s on almost a daily basis. The temperature inside a garage is even higher. Excessive exposure to high temperatures can damage temperature sensitive belongings.
Climate Controlled Units
Climate controlled units are typically kept between the temperatures of 70 and 85 degrees (F). Keeping the storage units from reaching extremely high temperatures. Such high temperatures can be harmful to temperature-sensitive items such as electronics, paintings, furniture and photographs.
Non-Climate Controlled Storage
The temperature in a non-climate storage unit will reflect closely to the temperature outdoors. In the hot summer months the temperature inside the storage unit will increase and surpass the temperature outside. This can be acceptable for most of your belongings but be mindful of belongings that may not be able to withstand hot temperatures.
How long you plan on storing and what season it is can play a big role on the type of unit to rent. If you’ll be storing all year, your belongings will be exposed to all four seasons. Depending on what you are storing this may mean you might need to consider climate controlled self storage. On the other hand, if you just need it for a few months and these months are in the Fall, Winter or even Spring you would more than likely want to consider the non climate-controlled self storage.
Price is also a factor. Typically climate controlled units run higher in price than non climate-controlled units. This is because it costs more to maintain a climate controlled unit.
